Stonebwoy Confident of Winning Back-to-Back Artiste of the Year

Story Highlights
  • Stonebwoy aims to make history by winning the Artiste of the Year award again
  • Stonebwoy leads the TGMA nominations with eight, more than any other artist
  • His album has gained international recognition

Dancehall artist Stonebwoy, the reigning Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artiste of the Year (AOTY), is confident of making history by winning the prestigious award back-to-back. He believes that, despite facing strong contenders like King Promise, Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke, Joe Mettle, King Paluta, and Team Eternity Ghana, there is no competition this year.

Stonebwoy, who has dominated the AOTY category with his popularity and audience appeal, feels his chances are solid. The AOTY award is given to the artist with the highest nominations, appeal, and a hit single/EP/album. Stonebwoy’s work in the past year, including his major hits “Psalm 23,” “Ekelebe,” and “Jiggle and Whine,” has earned him eight nominations, the most of any artist in this year’s TGMA.

According to Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng, Head of Public Relations for Burniton Music Group (BMG), Stonebwoy stands out due to his widespread popularity and consistent work. His 13-track album Up and Runnin6, featuring international artists like Wyclef Jean and Spice, has gained global recognition, including in the Caribbean. Stonebwoy’s credibility and sold-out shows in Ghana and the UK further cement his dominance.

Ms. Boateng dismissed the idea that Stonebwoy should give up the award to younger artists, stressing that his consistent hard work and significant contribution to the industry make him a deserving candidate. She urged that the award be given based on merit, not fan-based biases.

Stonebwoy, while acknowledging the healthy competition, congratulated the other nominees and expressed his excitement about the ongoing creative competition. Reflecting on his recent success at the Up and Runnin6 concert in London, where he performed at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, he thanked Live Nation for their partnership, celebrating the strong connection with his UK fans from diverse backgrounds.
