Alabaster Box Sues Medikal for GHC15 Million Over Song Copyright

- Alabaster Box sues Medikal over unauthorized sample use in Welcome to Africa
- Group claims copyright infringement of their 2002 song Akwaaba
- Seeks GHC15 million in damages plus song takedown and revenue disclosure
Gospel group Alabaster Box has filed a GHC15 million lawsuit against rapper Medikal, alleging copyright infringement over his song Welcome to Africa.
According to the group, the first 10 seconds of Medikal’s track directly samples their 2002 hit Akwaaba without authorization. Despite issuing a demand letter, the song remains available on platforms like Apple Music, Boomplay, and Spotify.
The lawsuit seeks several reliefs, including damages, removal of the song from all platforms, termination of related commercial deals, and an injunction against further use. The group is also demanding a full accounting of revenue and GHC15 million in damages.
Medikal has eight days to respond or risk a default judgment.
