Ten people have been arrested for engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) within the protected Boin Forest Reserve in the Aowin Municipality of Ghana’s Western North Region.

The arrests were made during a joint operation conducted by the Enchi Forest Division and military personnel assigned to protect the country’s natural resources. The suspects were apprehended in a part of the forest near the Ivory Coast border—an area increasingly exploited by illegal miners due to its mineral wealth and remote location.

Joe Appiah Frimpong, Manager of the Enchi Forest Division, confirmed the arrests and said the suspects have been handed over to Enchi police for further investigation and possible prosecution. He noted that the action forms part of broader efforts to combat illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s forest reserves, water bodies, and farmlands.

Mr. Frimpong warned that the Enchi Forest Division, in partnership with security agencies, remains committed to protecting forest lands and will take strict action against anyone involved in unlawful mining activities.
