Supreme Court Dismisses Objection to Acting CJ’s Role in Torkornoo Case

Story Highlights
  • The Supreme Court unanimously rejected an objection raised by former Attorney General Godfred Dame
  • Dame argued that Acting CJ Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s role in empaneling and presiding over the case was improper
  • The Court ruled that there were no legal grounds to disqualify Baffoe-Bonnie from the proceedings

The Supreme Court has unanimously rejected an objection by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame challenging the inclusion of acting Chief Justice Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie in the panel hearing the case related to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Mr. Dame argued that it was “unprecedented” and procedurally inappropriate for the acting Chief Justice to both empanel and preside over a matter directly involving the sitting Chief Justice, warning that such an arrangement could undermine public trust in judicial independence.

However, after a short recess, the panel reconvened and dismissed the objection, ruling that the concerns raised were not sufficient to disqualify Justice Baffoe-Bonnie from overseeing the proceedings. The Court assured that proper judicial procedure would be maintained throughout.

The panel includes Justices Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Henrietta Mensa Bonsu, Yonny Kulendi, Amadu Tanko, and Ernest Gaewu.

This ruling allows the legal proceedings regarding Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension to move forward.
