“I Tried to Reform Ghana Water, But I Became the Victim” – Afenyo Markin

- Minority Leader reveals victimisation in GWCL reform efforts
- Afenyo-Markin laments lack of support for reforms in state institutions
- He advises Deputy Energy Minister-designate to be bold and push for reforms
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has disclosed that he faced victimisation during his efforts to reform the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) while serving as its Board Chair.
The Effutu MP made this revelation during the vetting of Deputy Energy Minister-designate Richard Gyan-Mensah, highlighting the challenges faced by those who attempt to implement reforms within state institutions.
“I tried to reform Ghana Water, and I rather became the victim. It makes me sad as a politician because we don’t support each other for real reforms,” he lamented.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over the persistent resistance to change in state agencies, noting that reformers often encounter opposition from entrenched interests, leading to stagnation and inefficiencies that persist across successive governments.
He cautioned Mr. Gyan-Mensah to brace himself for similar resistance but encouraged him to remain determined in carrying out his responsibilities.
“If you are not assertive, you will spend your time there, come back, and find the same political football being played. The system will fight you, but you must be bold and push for real reforms,” he advised.
