A Ghanaian football fan sadly died during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Ghana and Chad, held in March at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars ended a six-match winless run with a dominant 5-0 win in the Matchday Five fixture. However, the celebration was marred by tragedy following a deadly stampede outside the stadium.

Eyewitness Rita, who was also injured in the incident, shared her account on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on May 7. She described a chaotic scene where fans, eager to enter the stadium, pushed from behind, creating a crush at the front gates.

“People at the front had no space to move. That’s when it all went wrong,” she recalled. Rita also alleged that some security officers responded violently, beating fans in the commotion.

She further revealed that her brother, Lawrence, who had travelled from Germany to visit family, was seriously injured during the chaos. He received initial treatment at Ridge Hospital but had to be flown back to Germany for urgent surgery due to the severity of his condition.

“Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and he’s now recovering,” Rita said.

In light of the incident, National Sports Authority (NSA) Communications Director, Charles Amofa, urged all injured fans to contact the NSA for assistance. “We take this incident seriously and encourage anyone affected to come forward,” he said.
