The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly denounced the vicious attack on Murtala Inusah, a court correspondent for EIB Network, by supporters of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Accra High Court.
Bishop Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, were attending a hearing related to their 16-year-old son, Elrad Amoako’s involvement in a tragic car accident at East Legon, resulting in two fatalities. During the proceedings, Murtala Inusah, clearly identified by his Judicial Press Corps ID badge, was assaulted by sympathizers objecting to his filming.
The attack resulted in Mr. Inusah losing his phone and suffering physical harm. In a statement released on Thursday, the GJA described the assault as “devilish” and demanded swift police action against the perpetrators.
“The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) condemns in the strongest terms the brutal assault on EIB Network court correspondent Murtala Inusah by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako on Wednesday, October 16, 2024,” the statement read. “This senseless attack left Mr. Inusah, a Legal Affairs Correspondent, with injuries to his fingers and severe bodily pain.”
The GJA emphasized that a court warrant officer who attempted to assist Mr. Inusah was also assaulted, condemning this act without reservation. They urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly arrest and prosecute the attackers and appealed to the Judiciary to impose severe punishments if found guilty.
Murtala Inusah has filed a formal complaint at the Ministries Police Station, submitting necessary documents. The GJA pressed the police to expedite their investigation, reiterating that violence against journalists and law enforcement officers on duty must face the full force of the law.
