- The NDC stresses the importance of political neutrality
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, reinforcing its pledge to safeguard Ghana’s environment.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 15, Alhassan Suhuyini, the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, revealed that the NDC plans to collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders.
This includes traditional leaders, local communities, environmental groups, and industry experts, aiming to implement the sustainable solutions detailed in their 2024 manifesto to address the galamsey issue.
The NDC advocates for a cooperative approach to effectively combat illegal mining and mitigate its severe effects on Ghana’s natural resources.
They highlighted that solving the galamsey problem requires a multi-pronged strategy: enhancing enforcement, encouraging responsible mining practices, and providing alternative livelihoods for those currently engaged in illegal mining.
Recognizing the critical challenges posed by galamsey, such as water contamination, deforestation, and farmland destruction, the NDC is dedicated to fostering a sense of collective responsibility among all stakeholders.
They also voiced concerns about the current government’s lack of transparency and accountability in addressing illegal mining.
The NDC stressed the necessity for law enforcement and regulatory agencies to operate free from political interference to combat illegal mining effectively.
They believe engaging stakeholders will build public trust and ensure accountability in the fight against galamsey.
Reiterating their commitment to environmental preservation for future generations, the NDC pledged to promote inclusive and sustainable solutions.
They assured Ghanaians of their future government’s dedication to working with civil society and labor unions to implement robust policies addressing both the economic drivers of illegal mining and the urgent need for environmental protection.
The NDC emphasized the importance of united action to find enduring solutions that will protect Ghana’s natural resources for the benefit of future generations.
