“Voters Have Become Wiser in Choosing Leaders” – John Dumelo After Election Win

- Dumelo Wins Ayawaso West Wuogon Seat
- Voters Not Easily Swayed by Handouts
- Dumelo Attributes Win to Hard Work
John Dumelo, the newly-elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has praised the electorate for their growing political awareness and maturity in choosing leaders.
Dumelo’s comments followed the recently held elections, during which he faced off against Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He had earlier accused Alhassan of attempting to sway voters by distributing food items and money, as well as whispering into their ears while they were in the voting queue.
In an interview on Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, Dumelo attributed his success to his dedication and the growing political consciousness of the voters in the constituency. He emphasized that voters are increasingly making informed decisions based on policies and their present circumstances, rather than being swayed by material incentives.
“Judging the results that came in, you can’t fool the people all the time. If they don’t want to vote for you, they would collect the things and still not vote for you,” Dumelo said, reflecting on the electorate’s ability to see through such tactics.
While he acknowledged that his opponent could have resorted to distributing items to garner support, Dumelo firmly stated that doing so would have been politically unethical.
“You don’t fight crime with crime; that’s why I was just cool and calm about it,” he remarked, emphasizing his approach of maintaining integrity throughout the campaign.
Dumelo, who won the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), focused his campaign on prioritizing the needs and interests of his constituents, aiming to build strong relationships with voters and address their concerns. He triumphed over the incumbent MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, securing 47,560 votes to Alhassan’s 39,214 votes.
