Parliament passes bill to establish National Defence University

Parliament has passed the National Defence University Bill, which provides for the establishment of a National Defence University to coordinate tertiary-level military institutions under a single authority.

According to 3News, the proposed university will operate as an autonomous, degree-awarding institution dedicated to defence, security and strategic studies. It will be able to award certificates, diplomas and degrees.

The bill is intended to create a legal framework for the institution to supervise and regulate defence training establishments while maintaining consistent academic standards across them.

The university is also expected to support the training of military personnel, security officers and public-sector professionals in response to changing national and international security challenges.

As a central hub for teaching, research and professional development, the institution is expected to strengthen defence education and leadership development. The proposal also envisages collaboration involving the Ghana Armed Forces, other security agencies and international partners.

The passage of the bill marks a parliamentary step towards creating a unified structure for higher-level defence education and strategic studies in Ghana.
