Ghana Health Service Conducts Nationwide Measles Vaccination

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a nationwide immunization exercise to protect children from measles and rubella. The campaign is scheduled to take place from October 2 to October 6, 2024.

The target age group for the immunization program is children between nine months and 59 months. This initiative aims to safeguard young ones from debilitating diseases while providing essential vitamin A supplements.

According to Dr. Samuel Boakye-Boateng, Regional Director of Health Service, the Upper East Region experienced measles outbreaks earlier this year. Bawku West and Garu Districts reported multiple cases, while five other districts recorded a few instances.

Dr. Boakye-Boateng emphasized the importance of the initiative during a press conference in the Upper East Region. He explained that the exercise is a national supplemental immunization activity with measles-rubella vaccine.

The program is integrated with vitamin A supplementation to support children’s overall health and well-being. This year, Ghana recorded measles outbreaks across the country.

Dr. Boakye-Boateng defined an outbreak as three or more cases in a district. Bawku West and Garu met this criteria, prompting concerns.

The GHS urges parents to ensure their eligible children participate in the immunization program. Community support is crucial for the campaign’s success.

Immunization will take place in various locations, including health centers, schools, markets, bus stations, churches, and communities nationwide.

The measles-rubella vaccine is safe and effective. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to protect their children.

By participating in this nationwide immunization exercise, Ghanaians can help safeguard the health and well-being of their children, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
