Hear Anti-LGBTQ Bill Cases Quickly, Sam George Tells Courts
- Sam George frustrated with Supreme Court delay
- Cases related to anti-LGBTQ bill need swift determination
- Pending cases since July without hearings
- Judicial Service denies Chief Justice delay claims
Sam George, the lead sponsor of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has expressed frustration over the Supreme Court’s delay in hearing two cases related to the bill.
He argues that these cases, which could impact both the legislature and executive, should be prioritized for a swift determination.
George emphasized that there is no matter before the Supreme Court more important than determining a matter that affects both legislature and executive.
He believes that the Supreme Court should handle the matter urgently, citing a previous judgment by Justice Yonny Kulendi that aligns with the issues raised in the current cases.
The cases of Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky have been pending since July, with the Supreme Court yet to begin hearings.
The Supreme Court declined to rule on applications seeking to injunct Parliament from transmitting the bill to the President and promised an expedited hearing of the substantive case.
George announced the postponement of a planned demonstration against the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, shifting it from September 17 to October 8.
This decision was made due to a political event scheduled for September 17 against the Electoral Commission.
The Judicial Service of Ghana has refuted claims that the Chief Justice is delaying the determination of the cases.
George remains adamant that the Supreme Court should prioritize the cases and make a swift determination, ensuring the bill’s future is decided promptly.
