Gov’t Assures Support for Ghanaians Facing U.S. Deportation

- Foreign Affairs Ministry pledges safe return and reintegration of deported Ghanaians
- Over 3,500 undocumented immigrants arrested under U.S. enforcement
- Deportation flights resumed, some using military aircraft
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safe return, reintegration, and reunification of Ghanaians being deported from the United States.
This follows a surge in immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, during which over 3,500 undocumented immigrants have been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since President Trump took office. Deportation flights have resumed, with reports indicating the use of U.S. military aircraft in some cases.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra ahead of the ECOWAS at 50 launch, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that while there have been no major updates from Ghana’s embassy in Washington, the government is working diligently behind the scenes to support affected citizens.
“For humanitarian and human rights reasons, we’ve chosen not to disclose the identities or details of the returnees,” he explained.
“We ensure they are received on arrival, assisted with reintegration, and reunited with their families. We’re also partnering quietly with other organizations to safeguard their dignity and avoid unnecessary public scrutiny.”
He emphasized Ghana’s continued commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad, especially those facing involuntary return.
