The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on political parties to set aside their skepticism towards the Electoral Commission and focus on upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking during a dinner with members of the Ghana Bar Association at the Manhyia Palace, held in conjunction with the Association’s Annual General Conference, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II highlighted the critical need to rebuild trust between the Electoral Commission and the political contestants.
He emphasized that while vigilance from political parties is essential, restoring mutual confidence is equally crucial for ensuring a peaceful and credible election. Reflecting on Ghana’s democratic journey, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed optimism about the country’s ability to maintain its democratic values despite challenges.
He noted that Ghana has navigated various governance systems over the decades, from one-party states and military rule to democratic elections. His confidence in the system stems from its proven resilience and ability to reflect the will of the people.
“Ghanaians have always chosen their path to freedom and democracy, and I believe this will continue. While vigilance is important, so is restoring trust between the Electoral Commission and the political parties. Let’s focus on our shared goal of a peaceful and transparent electoral process,” he said.
