Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs, has opposed a complete ban on mining in Ghana. Instead, he advocates for stricter regulations to ensure responsible mining practices.

The chief emphasized that mining is a vital contributor to the nation’s economy and that a blanket ban would negatively impact the country.

He also warned that such a move could lead to significant job losses, particularly among young people.

Despite his stance against illegal mining, known as galamsey, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II stressed that Ghanaians should be allowed to engage in mining activities using proper methods.

He pointed out that the Minerals Commission is already responsible for regulating the industry.

The chief’s comments come amidst growing calls for a ban on small-scale mining or the declaration of a state of emergency due to the devastating effects of galamsey on the environment. However, he urged a focus on promoting responsible mining practices.

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abdullai Jinapor, echoed Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II sentiments, stating that the government is committed to combating illegal mining.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by cartels but vowed to continue protecting water bodies, the environment, and forest reserves.
