On the night of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, gunmen attacked the palace of a local sub-chief in Poayamire, a village in the Binduri District, resulting in one fatality and two others being injured.

The victims have been identified as Naba Atamburi, the sub-chief, and two of his family members, all of whom were shot during the assault.

The injured were immediately taken to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Tragically, one of the victims died from their injuries while being transported to the hospital, while the other two remain in critical condition and are receiving care.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though many locals speculate that it could be connected to the ongoing violence in the Bawku area. Tensions in the region have been rising, especially following an alleged police shooting that resulted in the death of a civilian.

The conflict in Bawku, which reignited in October 2024, has already claimed at least 83 lives, with the death toll continuing to rise. This latest attack on the sub-chief’s palace has heightened fears that the situation could spiral further out of control, threatening the already fragile peace in the region.

While security forces have not yet released an official statement on the incident, investigations are currently underway. Authorities are working to restore calm as the community grapples with the aftermath of this latest act of violence tied to the ongoing Bawku conflict.
