Mepe Chief Appeals for Government Support Amid Skin Disease Outbreak in Volta Region

Story Highlights
  • Togbe Kwasi Amedor III raises alarm over a communicable skin disease outbreak in Avetakpo
  • Over 46 people affected, with both children and adults suffering from sleep deprivation and body pains
  • Lack of clean drinking water and uncertainty about the disease’s origin contribute to the spread

Togbe Kwasi Amedor III, the sub-divisional chief of Mepe Gbavie-Dekume, has raised concerns over an outbreak of a communicable skin disease affecting both children and adults in the Avetakpo enclave, a farming community in the Ho West District of the Volta Region.

The chief reports that residents are enduring sleep deprivation and persistent body pains. However, many are unable to seek medical treatment due to financial difficulties.

At the request of the local Queen Mother, Mama Aku Seme II, officials from the Ho West District Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) visited the community. They have provided an estimated budget of GH₵ 6,642.50 for treatment, but the community is unable to raise this amount.

“We are pleading with the government to assist us because we cannot raise the GH₵ 6,642.50 needed,” said Togbe Amedor III. The disease has spread to nearby communities, affecting more than 46 people so far. The chief is urgently calling for government intervention to fund mass medical treatment and preventive measures. He also expressed frustration over the lack of information from health authorities regarding the disease’s name and origin, leaving the community in uncertainty. Furthermore, the lack of clean drinking water, with residents sharing water sources with animals, may be exacerbating the outbreak.

Togbe Amedor III’s plea emphasizes the critical need for government support to contain the outbreak and prevent its further spread.
