  • Floodlights and infrastructure in disrepair

Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, has announced that the government plans to close the Accra Sports Stadium for renovations after the international football window in March.

Ghana is set to face Chad in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday, March 21, 2025, marking the first time the stadium will host a football match since November 2024.

However, the four-month period of inactivity has left unresolved issues at the stadium, with the Minister suggesting that the “Nation’s Wembley” is no longer suitable for use.

“We need to close the Accra Sports Stadium for refurbishment to bring it up to standard,” Adams said in an interview with TV3.

“Following our assessment, the engineers have advised that the entire upper stand near Independence Square should not be used due to structural integrity concerns, so fans will be excluded from that area.”

He also highlighted the condition of the stadium’s floodlights, noting that the brackets supporting the lights are heavily rusted.

“The stadium is essentially in a state of disrepair,” he added.

The Accra Sports Stadium last underwent significant renovations in 2018 ahead of that year’s Women’s AFCON tournament, which was hosted by Ghana.
