“We Will See Dumsor Till the End of the Year” – IES

- IES warns of continued power outages until year-end
- ECG's inefficiencies blamed for ongoing "dumsor" crisis
- Revenue shortfalls hinder operations of energy sector players
The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has warned that Ghanaians should prepare for ongoing power outages, commonly known as “dumsor,” throughout the rest of the year.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Nana Amoasi VII attributed the persistent power crisis to significant inefficiencies within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to him, until these operational issues are addressed, the situation is unlikely to improve.
“We know very well that we have these challenges, and until we address the inefficiencies in the ECG, I am sorry to say again that we will see dumsor till the end of the year,” Nana Amoasi VII stated.
He further emphasized that resolving the ongoing crisis requires ECG to fix its operational inefficiencies, collect sufficient revenue, and ensure that all stakeholders within the energy sector receive a fair share of the revenue.
“Until the ECG fixes its inefficiency, collects enough of the revenue, and ensures that each participant within the energy sector gets a fair share of the revenue, we will continue to have this challenge,” he added.
Nana Amoasi VII explained that the revenue shortfalls were significantly impacting the operations of key players in the energy sector. For instance, GRIDCo, responsible for power transmission, is struggling to invest in its aging infrastructure. Similarly, ECG faces infrastructural challenges due to a lack of adequate funding.
“It will be difficult for the power generator, be it public or private, to generate power because they also need to make some input into the power generation. There will be difficulty for WAPCo to continue supplying the natural gas. So, we are in a very uncomfortable state,” he noted.
