The National Media Commission (NMC) is set to introduce a new “Media Watch” app aimed at combating misinformation and disinformation as Ghana approaches the general elections.
The NMC has emphasized that this app will empower both journalists and citizens to report suspicious activities occurring at polling stations in real time, facilitating immediate responses to potential issues.
During a forum hosted by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) on the theme “Moderating the Airwaves for Peaceful and Credible Elections 2024,” NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong spoke about the app’s transformative potential for election integrity and journalist safety.
“This app will be a game-changer, providing highly accurate information from polling stations across Ghana,” Mr. Sarpong stated.
He elaborated on its functionality, explaining, “In terms of election results, anyone present at a polling station can record and submit footage as results are declared. The system will then verify the authenticity of the submitted content.”
Mr. Sarpong further noted, “In the case of any disputes, this tool will provide solid evidence for those seeking to understand what occurred and to address any issues effectively.”
