Nana Kwame Bediako, leader of the New Force and independent presidential candidate, has publicly denounced the recent protests led by Democracy Hub, which resulted in 39 demonstrators being remanded into police custody. Bediako acknowledged the frustrations of Ghana’s youth but emphasized that violence and protests are not the solution.

While taking a break from his tour of Ghana’s 276 constituencies, Bediako addressed the fallout from the three-day protest. He urged the youth to seek change through knowledge and wisdom rather than confrontation. “Power is taken, not given,” Bediako stated, “but we must take it with wisdom and knowledge. Violence, of course, is not going to be the right way for us to send the message.”

The protest, held near the 37 Military Hospital Intersection in Accra, led to charges of unlawful assembly, conspiracy, and damage to public property. Following confrontations with law enforcement, 39 protesters were arrested and arraigned on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. They have been remanded into both prison and police custody.

Bediako expressed disapproval of the protests, understanding the reasons behind them but calling for a focus on building the country. “We have to be patient. We have to know that Ghana is our only country. We cannot go anywhere else if we mess it up,” he warned, urging the youth to “build it together.”

The Democracy Hub has faced criticism from the Ghana Police Service, with their actions labeled “unGhanaian” . However, Bediako’s message emphasizes the importance of peaceful and constructive engagement.
