Alfred Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has issued a stern ultimatum to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to tackle illegal mining (galamsey) decisively.

During a Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG) press briefing, Dwumfour demanded that the government act on five critical issues by the end of September 2024 to address the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining.

The demands include declaring a state of emergency on water bodies, revoking mining concessions near rivers, canceling permits in biodiversity areas, repealing L.I. 2462, and securing public commitments from presidential candidates.

The GJA’s next steps will hinge on the government’s response, to be announced in two weeks.
