Former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Charlotte Osei has spoken out about her removal from office in 2018, revealing that she was not surprised by the events that led to her dismissal. Mrs. Osei stated that she knew the people involved in the process and therefore expected the outcome.
She described the entire process, from the petition to the end, as a “whole drama” orchestrated by certain individuals. After reviewing the petition and the findings, Mrs. Osei was convinced that the process was biased and predetermined.
However, she admitted that she still doesn’t know the motivations behind her removal, saying “As for the why, I don’t know.” Mrs. Osei refrained from commenting on whether her removal was politically motivated, but promised to reveal the full story in her upcoming book.
In 2018, Mrs. Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, were removed from office following a committee’s recommendations after investigating allegations of corruption and misconduct.
The petition against her, filed by concerned EC workers in 2017, accused her of unilateral decision-making and fraudulent activities, including the cancellation of a contract with Superlock Technologies Limited (STL) and authorizing a $76,000 payment to IT firm Dream Oval.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Mrs. Osei criticized the process as “excessively petty and unnecessary” and expressed her determination to tell her side of the story, especially for the benefit of her granddaughters. Mrs. Osei, who is in her 30th year of law practice, stated that her removal from the EC does not define her career, and she has had the privilege of doing many different things throughout her life.
