The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern warning to politicians to desist from assaulting journalists as the 2024 elections draw near. According to the GJA, politicians have a tendency to exploit the forbearance of journalists, subjecting them to various forms of assault when the political climate becomes heated.
GJA President Albert Dwumfour emphasized the need for politicians to respect the rights and safety of journalists during his speech at the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra. Dwumfour warned politicians that any incidents of assault on journalists before, during, or after the 2024 elections would not be taken lightly.
He emphasized the importance of strong institutions, quoting former US President Barack Obama, and stressed that the GJA would not tolerate any form of hostility towards journalists. The GJA has formed an alliance with other media blocks, known as the media coalition, to expose and caution against unprofessional and unethical behavior in the media.
Dwumfour reiterated the need for politicians to accommodate journalists and respect their role in the democratic process. He warned that any politician who fails to demonstrate the necessary commitment to accommodating journalists would be met with hostility.
