  • Sosu's own Bill on paternity leave is already in advanced stages.
  • Sosu accuses government of lacking sincerity.

Francis Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, has expressed skepticism about the government’s commitment to introducing a Bill on paternity leave and extending maternity leave. During the mid-year budget presentation, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced plans to introduce a draft Labour Bill, 2024, which includes provisions for paternity leave and extended maternity leave.

However, Sosu believes this is just a political gimmick by the NPP government, lacking genuine commitment to passing such a Bill. Sosu has already introduced a Bill on paternity leave and extension of maternity leave, which has reached an advanced stage in the legislative process.

He expressed his doubts about the government’s announcement, stating that his Bill is already on its way to being gazetted for the first reading. Sosu emphasized that if Parliament prioritizes his Bill, it can be passed before the current Parliament’s term ends.

He questioned the government’s sincerity, wondering why they didn’t support his efforts instead of making new promises. Sosu stressed that the government’s announcement lacks commitment, urgency, and respect for the people of Ghana.

He suggested that the President should have expressed support for his Bill and assured its passage and assent before leaving office. Sosu’s concerns highlight the need for genuine commitment to policy changes, rather than mere political promises.
