Mahama Criticizes NPP Government Over High Cost of Hajj Pilgrimage

Story Highlights
  • Mahama expressed dismay at the significant increase in Hajj expenses
  • He emphasized that this high cost makes it difficult for them to fulfill their spiritual obligation of Hajj
  • Mahama contrasted the current GH¢75,000.00 Hajj fare with the fare during his presidency, which was GH¢11,900.00

John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, expressed dismay at the steep expenses associated with Hajj under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Mahama lamented that during his presidency, Hajj costs were within reach for Ghana’s Muslim community. “The current Hajj pilgrimage cost is a heavy financial burden, making it difficult for many ordinary Muslims to fulfill this spiritual obligation,” he remarked.

He pointed out that under his leadership, Hajj fares were significantly lower, at GH¢11,900.00, contrasting sharply with the current GH¢75,000.00 rate. This rise, Mahama argued, forces many to explore alternative means to undertake their pilgrimage. “I recognize the importance of Hajj and am committed to making it accessible to all,” he assured.

Speaking at an Eid prayer event with the Ahlussuna Wal-Jamah group, Mahama pledged strategic efforts, if re-elected, to reduce Hajj costs for Ghanaian Muslims. “I will tirelessly work to ensure that every Muslim can participate without financial strain,” he affirmed, urging continued celebrations of Eid and prayers for national peace and prosperity.
