“We Will Pay Monthly Allowance to Paramount Chiefs, Queen Mothers” – Bawumia

- VP Bawumia promises living allowance for paramount chiefs and queen mothers
- Aim is to resource the Chieftaincy institution to carry out its responsibilities
- Amendment of Chieftaincy Act also planned to empower chiefs to enforce discipline
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to pay a living allowance to the Chieftaincy institution if he wins the 2024 election. Addressing the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, he emphasized the need to resource the institution to carry out its responsibilities effectively.
“To really empower the Chieftaincy institution, we need to resource it financially,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “We propose paying living wages to paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers.”
The Vice President also promised to amend the Chieftaincy Act to empower chiefs to enforce discipline and resolve disputes within their communities. “We need to re-empower the chiefs by amending section 63D of the Chieftaincy Act, which will be a priority of mine,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia believes this proposal will reduce the backlog of cases in the courts and promote discipline in society. The Vice President’s promises aim to support the Chieftaincy institution in playing its proper role in Ghana’s governance and development.
