The Ashaiman Circuit Court, under the direction of His Worship Mr. Derrick Parden Eshun, has sentenced 20-year-old scrap dealer, Tahiru Issah, to 12 months of hard labor in prison.

The sentence follows Issah’s guilty plea to charges of theft when he appeared before the court on March 5, 2025.

According to Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, who prosecuted the case, Tahiru Issah is a Nigerien national residing in the Fitter Line area of Ashaiman.

The prosecutor explained that on February 26, 2025, officers from the Gbetsile District Police were on a routine night patrol when they noticed Issah carrying a black polythene bag with heavy contents. The police became suspicious and stopped him. Upon searching the bag, they found six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, valued at GH¢3,250, which had been stolen from Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

Tahiru was arrested and taken to the Afienya Police Station. During questioning, he confessed to stealing the items from local residents. He was subsequently charged with theft and held in custody before being brought to court.

Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for the Tema Region of GWL, expressed appreciation for the court’s ruling. He highlighted that the company has recently been facing an increase in meter theft, which has significantly disrupted its operations. Dr. Eson urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious individuals to the authorities.

He also warned scrap dealers and others involved in stealing GWL equipment to cease such activities, stressing that anyone caught would face severe legal consequences.
