A key figure in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Sammy Awuku, has shed light on the anticipated moment when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer will reveal his choice for running mate ahead of the upcoming December elections.
According to JMr Awuku, Dr. Bawumia has already made his decision regarding a running mate and is poised to introduce the chosen individual to the public imminently.
This disclosure comes amidst widespread speculation both within the NPP ranks and among political analysts regarding the apparent delay in naming a running mate, a delay that has fueled discussions about potential candidates and its potential impact on the party’s electoral fortunes.
However, Mr Awuku sought to allay any concerns, emphasizing that Dr. Bawumia’s timeline for announcing his running mate remains well within historical precedent. He pointed to the example of Nana Akufo-Addo, who selected Dr. Bawumia as his running mate in August 2008, highlighting the variability in the timing of such announcements.
“We are very much within the timeline. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines,” Mr Awuku asserted during an interview.
He further emphasized that the announcement could come at any moment, asserting, “It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be, and when he is ready, he is going to announce that.”
