Mahama outlines possible Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire bid to host AFCON

Story Highlights
  • Mahama said Ghana wants at least five stadiums able to host CAF competitions.
  • He said improved venues could help Ghana pursue a future AFCON hosting opportunity.
  • Ghana last hosted the AFCON in 2008, with matches played in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi and Tamale.

President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana could explore hosting a future Africa Cup of Nations jointly with neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire, as the country works to improve stadium infrastructure.

According to 3News, the President raised the prospect during an inspection visit to Ho Stadium, where he outlined an ambition for Ghana to have at least five venues that meet Confederation of African Football standards over the coming years.

Mahama said stronger stadium infrastructure would be important if Ghana is to pursue major continental football competitions. He indicated that the planned facilities should be able to host CAF matches properly, with the wider aim of positioning the country to welcome major international tournaments.

Ghana last staged the AFCON in 2008, using venues in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi and Tamale. Mahama said the country could be approaching the point at which it is ready to host the competition again.

He suggested that a partnership with Côte d’Ivoire could be one option for a future bid. Côte d’Ivoire is Ghana’s western neighbour and hosted the 2023 AFCON, which was played in early 2024.

The President’s comments come amid ongoing assessments and upgrades of sports facilities across Ghana, 3News reported. The proposed expansion of CAF-standard stadiums is intended to support the hosting of international competitions as well as broader football development.

No formal joint bid, host timetable or list of the five proposed stadiums was announced in the report.
