President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana’s Black Stars can develop into a side capable of competing for major honours, if the current squad is maintained and the technical team is allowed to continue its work.
According to 3News, the President made the remarks during an inspection visit to Ho Sports Stadium, where he reflected on the national team’s reported performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mahama said the team had exceeded expectations by reaching the Round of 32 after some observers had predicted an early exit. He said the campaign showed resilience and suggested that the current group has a strong foundation for future competitions.
The President urged football authorities to avoid starting again with a new team, instead arguing for continuity in both the playing squad and coaching structure. He said retaining the group and persuading the coach to remain could leave Ghana better placed for the next Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.
He also called for early preparation, sustained planning and investment as the country looks to improve its prospects in international football.
The comments came during a visit that 3News described as part of a wider inspection of sporting facilities around the country. The report said the exercise is intended to assess whether facilities can meet standards needed to develop talent and support national teams.
Ghana’s senior men’s team has won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, but has not lifted the continental title since 1982. Mahama’s remarks place emphasis on building on the existing squad rather than pursuing another wholesale rebuilding process.
