The Western Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association has launched the 2026 Western and Western North Journalism Excellence Awards and Corporate Awards, using the occasion to call for stronger support for media practitioners.

According to 3News, the launch was held under the theme “Reporting Progress. Investing in People” and brought together traditional authorities, media executives, government officials and corporate representatives. The awards are intended to recognise journalism and corporate contributions to community development in the two regions.

Western Regional GJA Chairman Desmond Cudjoe said the awards should be seen as more than a recognition ceremony. He said journalism helps connect development initiatives with the public and gives citizens information needed to participate in national life.

Mr Cudjoe also raised concerns about the working conditions of some journalists, saying practitioners may travel long distances and meet reporting costs such as transport, data and equipment while receiving low pay. He appealed to media owners, corporate bodies and government to prioritise journalists’ welfare, safety and professional development.

He urged journalists to maintain standards of accuracy, fairness and ethics. Mr Cudjoe named Damang Mine Company Limited as headline sponsor of this year’s awards, the report said.

The event was chaired by Nana Nteboa Pra V, Divisional Chief of Prestea Himan and a former journalist. He described journalism as essential to society, comparing it to salt in soup, and said attacks on media workers could discourage journalists from carrying out their duties.

Nana Nteboa Pra V called for alleged perpetrators of attacks against journalists to be brought to justice. He also encouraged media owners to treat investment in staff as a long-term priority, including by supporting award winners to pursue further studies or professional training.

Addressing digital misinformation, the chief cautioned that content creators who do not follow verification and fact-checking standards can contribute to public tension. He further encouraged journalists in the Western and Western North Regions to lead coverage of local issues, including mining, oil and gas, and environmental matters.

The launch formally begins the 2026 awards season for the two regions.
