PURC Ashanti resolves 978 utility complaints by mid-year

The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says it resolved 978 of the 1,208 complaints it received against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the first half of 2026.

According to the commission, the figure represents a resolution rate of 81.29 per cent for complaints received during the period ending June.

Speaking to the media in Kumasi on July 16, the regional public relations officer, Richard Asiedu, said 1,116 complaints were lodged against ECG, while 92 concerned GWCL. The complaints covered billing and payment matters, service quality, disconnections or alleged unlawful disconnections, and damage to appliances.

The regional office said it secured GH¢108,969.40 in billing or payment adjustments in favour of some consumers who brought complaints to the commission. It also reported recovering GH¢55,664.74 from defaulting consumers for the utility providers.

Mr Asiedu said the office facilitated the replacement of 12 faulty electricity poles, 10 transformers and nine defective energy meters. It also assisted with six new service connections that had faced delays and the repair of 30 burst pipes.

He attributed the increase in complaints received by the regional office to the commission’s expanded public engagement, including community monitoring, complaint clinics and stakeholder engagements.
