Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the listings of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

KATH is located in the vibrant and culturally rich city of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region of Ghana in West Africa. In consonance with our time tested cultural heritage of hospitality, I say a big “AKWAABA”, meaning welcome in the Twi language of the people of this region.

KATH as established in 1955 was a regional hospital serving communities within the Ashanti region of Ghana. Over the years, however, this once relatively small regional hospital with less than 500 beds has grown to become a 1,200 bed tertiary medical centre and the teaching hospital of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.  Its legal mandate is to provide specialist care, training of under-graduate and post graduate health professionals and conduct medical research to address emerging health problems of Ghana.

It is currently one of the leading centres for the training of medical and allied health students with multiple accreditations for both under and post graduate training of health professionals in West Africa. The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Physicians (WACP) and West African College Surgeons (WACS) are but some of the few professional bodies that have accredited the hospital as their training centres.
