Retired Supreme Court Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe has passed away at the age of 74 after a brief illness. He died on Saturday, April 5, 2025, marking the end of a distinguished career dedicated to justice in Ghana.
Justice Gbadegbe’s judicial service spanned over 30 years, during which he gained respect for his integrity, legal expertise, and commitment to ethical standards. He served on the Supreme Court from 2009 until his retirement in December 2020 at the mandatory age of 70. Before this, he was a Court of Appeal judge from 1999 to 2009, and began his judicial career as a High Court judge in 1989.
A significant moment in his career was his role as one of the nine justices who presided over Ghana’s landmark 2012/2013 presidential election petition, a case that tested the strength of the nation’s democratic institutions.
Justice Gbadegbe was known for his meticulous adherence to procedure and his unwavering respect for due process. His judicial approach was grounded in fairness and a strong commitment to the rule of law.
