The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 3.02% increase in electricity tariffs and a 1.06% rise in water tariffs for the third quarter of 2024.
This adjustment will take effect from October 1, 2024, and will impact all categories of consumers, including residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
In a statement released on Saturday, September 28, the PURC explained that the tariff increase was necessary due to various economic factors.
Key considerations included inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and changes in gas prices.
The PURC also took into account Ghana’s current economic challenges and the prevailing living conditions.
The Commission ensured that the tariff adjustments balance the needs of consumers and service providers.
“The Commission’s decision is based on changes in some key parameters, such as inflation rate, exchange rate, and the Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) over the projected Third Quarter,” the PURC stated.
Several other underlying factors were considered, including the current economic conditions, general living standards of Ghanaians, and the competitiveness and sustainability of industries.
The PURC is mandated to review tariffs quarterly to ensure that utilities remain viable while protecting consumer interests.
