Minority Explains Rationale Behind Boycott of Lithium Agreement Deliberation
- The Minority boycotted the Lithium Mining Agreement meeting
- They expected the committee meeting to be rescheduled
- The committee meeting was only attended only by Majority members
Members of the Minority faction on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament have clarified their reasons for boycotting a crucial meeting on the Lithium Mining Agreement.
In July 2024, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor introduced the agreement, which involves the Government of Ghana and Barari DV, and subsequently referred it to the Lands and Natural Resources Committee for review.
Ranking Member Alhassan Suhuyini explained that the Minority’s absence from the meeting was due to a simultaneous emergency session of Parliament at the Accra International Conference Center.
According to Suhuyini, this scheduling conflict meant that the outcome of the committee meeting would not be recognized.
Suhuyini stated, “Given the nature of today’s [Tuesday’s] session and the chosen venue, we anticipated that the Committee meeting would be rescheduled to accommodate the emergency sitting. However, the committee chairman decided to proceed with the meeting despite our obligation to attend the parliamentary session.
“Consequently, our leadership chose to prioritize the emergency recall and remain in the Chamber for parliamentary business. This is why you might notice that the committee meeting consists solely of Majority members.”
