Mahama Demands Fair Handling of Drought Relief Funds, Warns Against NPP Favoritism
- Mahama warns against diverting drought relief funds to NPP supporters
- He emphasizes the need for equitable distribution and involvement of local chiefs
- Concerns are raised about potential misuse of funds
John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a firm warning against any potential diversion of drought relief funds to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The government has proposed using GHS 500 million from the contingency fund to aid farmers impacted by the drought, pending parliamentary approval.
During a rally in Ayorya, located in the Kintampo South District of the Bono Region, Mahama stressed the importance of distributing the relief funds equitably, without regard to political connections.
He expressed apprehension that the NPP could misuse the funds, drawing a comparison to the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 relief funds.
Mahama called for the involvement of local chiefs in the distribution process to ensure transparency and accountability.
He remarked, “The NPP has made things challenging, and due to their misfortune, there has been no rainfall this year. With Parliament still pending approval for drought compensation, we cannot allow the funds to be distributed among themselves as was done with the COVID funds.”
“The aid must reach those in need, and we will be monitoring the situation closely. Chiefs should be included in the distribution process to ensure fairness.”
