NDC Demands Six Preconditions for Signing 2024 Election Peace Pact
- The NDC demands that the President, IGP, Chief Justice, National Security Coordinator, and A-G all sign the peace pact
- The NDC insists that President Akufo-Addo must publicly commit to respecting the outcome of the 2024 elections
- The party requires full implementation of recommendations from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence investigation
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated the party’s stance on refusing to sign a peace agreement for the upcoming 2024 General Elections. During a meeting with the National Peace Council on August 20, 2024, Asiedu Nketia outlined the NDC’s demands for signing the pact.
The NDC will only consider signing the peace agreement if certain conditions are met, Asiedu Nketia emphasized. The party demands that the President of Ghana, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney General all endorse the pact.
The National Peace Council, represented by Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, urged political parties to move beyond conflicts and commit to a peaceful electoral process. Bin Salih stressed the need for cooperation, goodwill, and trust to foster a peaceful environment, emphasizing that the council’s goal is to ensure a violence-free election.
However, Asiedu Nketia made it clear that the NDC is unwilling to overlook past grievances and will not sign the peace agreement unless certain conditions are met. President Akufo-Addo must publicly pledge to honor the 2024 election results, Asiedu Nketia demanded.
The NDC also insists on the full implementation of recommendations from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence investigation and the prosecution of those involved in violence and irregularities from the 2020 elections.
Asiedu Nketia’s demands highlight the NDC’s concerns about the credibility and fairness of the electoral process, and the party’s refusal to sign the peace agreement unless these conditions are met underscores the need for accountability and transparency in the upcoming elections.
