The Minority in Parliament has called out Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, for failing to adhere to his pledge of capping ministerial appointments at 50 if he becomes Ghana’s next president.
During the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, Dr. Bawumia stated that effective governance does not necessitate a high number of ministers.
However, Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim has questioned the credibility of this commitment. He pointed out that the number of staff, technical advisors, and spokespersons in Dr. Bawumia’s Vice Presidential office already surpasses the 123 ministers appointed by the current Akufo-Addo administration. This, he argues, undermines Dr. Bawumia’s assertion of reducing the ministerial count.
Ibrahim criticized the apparent contradiction, noting that the extensive use of official vehicles like V8s among Bawumia’s aides reflects an inflated bureaucracy.
Additionally, Ibrahim expressed frustration over the NPP manifesto’s omission of concrete plans for addressing Ghana’s debt servicing challenges.
He highlighted the manifesto’s failure to address how the party intends to manage the national debt, suggesting that the deferral of debt payments will lead to increased hardship in the future.
