The Ad hoc Committee of Parliament, established by the Speaker of Parliament, has concluded a four-day tour of the areas affected by the Akosombo Dam Spillage Disaster. The Committee, led by Chairman Suleman Adamu Sanid, Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano North, visited communities severely impacted by the disaster, including Mepe, Mafi, Sogakope, and Dambai.
The tour aimed to assess the extent of the damage and understand the challenges faced by the affected communities. During the visit, the Committee engaged with local residents, gathering firsthand information on the disaster’s impact on their lives and livelihoods.
The Committee’s findings revealed significant devastation, including destroyed homes, businesses, and infrastructure. According to Helena Adjoa Ntoso, Member of Parliament for Krachi West and a member of the Ad hoc Committee, the relief efforts have been inadequate.
Ntoso stated that the distribution of relief items has been woefully insufficient, leaving many victims without necessary support. The Committee’s report, yet to be finalized, will demand proper resettlement of the victims and address the shortcomings in relief efforts.
The Committee’s recommendations will focus on providing sustainable solutions to support the affected communities and prevent similar disasters in the future. The Ad hoc Committee’s findings and recommendations will be presented to Parliament, paving the way for comprehensive action to address the Akosombo Dam Spillage Disaster’s aftermath.
