The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) has sharply criticized the ongoing abuse of workers’ rights, particularly by foreign mining companies.

The union claims that deteriorating working conditions and intimidation tactics are driving workers away from the sector.

In a recent address, GMWU General Secretary Abdul-Moomin Gbana highlighted the challenges faced by workers, including arbitrary dismissals and the suppression of union activities.

He called for a comprehensive review of labor laws to better protect workers’ rights and ensure the sustainability of the mining industry.

Gbana accused foreign mining companies of collaborating with local authorities to undermine workers’ rights for their own benefit.

He cited the case of three union leaders at Sunon Asogli who were dismissed for joining a trade union. The union has been advocating for their reinstatement and compensation.

The GMWU has appealed to President Akufo-Addo and the Chief Justice to intervene in the case and ensure that the workers’ rights are fully protected.

The union believes that a strong and independent judiciary is essential for upholding labor rights and promoting a fair and just workplace.
