Speaker of Parliament Calls for Limit on Supreme Court Justices Amid New Nominations
- Speaker of Parliament, is advocating for new legislation to establish a maximum number of Supreme Court Justices
- Bagbin's proposal comes in response to Akufo-Addo's nomination of two new Supreme Court Judges
- He has called upon Parliament to deliberate on the matter
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is proposing legislation to impose a maximum number of Justices for the Supreme Court.
According to Ghana’s constitution, the Supreme Court can have up to nine judges, but no upper limit is specified.
Bagbin’s proposal comes after President Akufo-Addo nominated two new Judges to replace retiring ones.
Bagbin argues that it’s time to set a definite cap on Supreme Court appointments.
“We are now being called upon to decide whether the Supreme Court should have 13, 15, 20, 40, or 100 Justices. This decision lies with the Parliament,” said Alban Bagbin.
Bagbin’s call to action follows President Akufo-Addo nominating Justice Sophia Rosseta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong to fill upcoming vacancies.
Upon receiving the nominations, Bagbin forwarded them to the Appointment’s Committee for review and feedback.
