Story Highlights
  • Over 7,600 people have died in road accidents in Ghana between January and June 2024
  • Wrongful overtaking and disregard for traffic rules are primary causes of these fatal accidents
  • CILT Ghana demands a thorough investigation into the factors contributing to the surge in road accidents

A staggering 7,600 lives have been lost in road accidents across the country between January and June 2024, according to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA). The majority of these fatalities were caused by reckless driving behaviors such as overtaking improperly and disregarding traffic regulations.

Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the NRSA’s Public Relations Head, expressed deep concern over the alarming number of deaths, attributing many to head-on collisions resulting from excessive speed and dangerous overtaking maneuvers. She emphasized that a significant portion of Ghanaian drivers consistently disregard speed limits, which exacerbates the severity of accidents.

In response to the crisis, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Ghana has urged the government to establish an investigative committee to thoroughly examine the factors contributing to the recent surge in road accidents and publicly disclose its findings.
