Muntaka Doubts Feasibility of NPP’s Targeted 85% Win in Ashanti Region December Polls

Story Highlights
  • Muntaka pointed out that since 1992, the NDC has consistently garnered at least 20% of the votes in the Ashanti Region
  • Muntaka criticized the NPP's ambition to secure 85% of the votes in the region as unrealistic
  • Muntaka expressed confidence in the NDC's ability to compete effectively in the upcoming elections

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Member of Parliament for Asawase in the Ashanti Region and former Minority Chief Whip, has challenged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) goal of securing 85% of the votes in the upcoming December elections, calling it unrealistic.

Muntaka, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), asserted that historical voting trends suggest the NDC aims to achieve around 32% of the votes in the region.

Muntaka emphasized that since 1992, the NDC has never dipped below 20% in the Ashanti Region, making a target of 32% achievable. He questioned the practicality of the NPP’s strategy, suggesting it might involve efforts to suppress NDC supporters.

His comments came after the NPP’s announcement of their vice-presidential candidate in Kumasi, where Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh urged voters to deliver an 85% mandate to the party.

Muntaka expressed confidence in the NDC’s ability to compete, stating, “We are undeterred by Dr. Prempeh’s candidacy. Any missteps could play to our advantage.” He made these remarks following a meeting with the NDC parliamentary candidate for Tafo/Pankrono, community leaders, Zongo Chiefs, and religious figures, underscoring their readiness to contest ambitious electoral targets.

Alhaji Sahmudeen Mohammed Kamil, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Tafo/Pankrono, outlined their campaign’s focus on local issues such as unpaid Islamic teachers, youth unemployment, and high living costs. He defended their plan under John Dramani Mahama’s leadership to implement a 24-hour economy initiative, dismissing claims of insufficient details.

Despite facing tough competition in the constituency, Sahmudeen remained optimistic about defeating the incumbent MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, criticizing his representation. He urged voters to support the NDC for comprehensive national development.
