“Mahama Condemns Government’s Stance on Galamsey, Urges Better Governance”

Story Highlights
  • Mahama criticizes government for poor governance and inequality.
  • He proposes amnesty for galamsey operators, blaming government officials.
  • Mahama advocates for reducing government size from 120 to 60 ministers.
  • His statements spark debate and controversy ahead of elections.

Former President John Mahama recently addressed the media, criticizing the current government’s governance record and proposing controversial measures. Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of presiding over “deplorable governance, economic and social deprivations, poverty, and social inequality.”

He alleged that the NPP has masked incompetence with slogans, asserting that Ghana has regressed under their leadership. One of the most contentious proposals put forward by Mahama was the suggestion to grant amnesty to individuals involved in illegal mining activities, known as galamsey.

He argued that while operators must be held accountable, the ultimate responsibility lies with government officials, particularly District Chief Executives (DCEs) and Ministers, who he claims enable and benefit from the illicit practice. Mahama also advocated for a drastic reduction in the size of government, proposing to slash the current number of ministers from over 120 to just 60.

He argued that such a move would streamline operations and improve efficiency within the government, contrasting sharply with the current administration’s approach. Mahama’s statements have sparked widespread debate and controversy across political circles and the general public.

Supporters view his criticisms as necessary accountability measures, while critics argue they are politically motivated attacks ahead of the upcoming elections. The former President’s remarks come amidst a charged political atmosphere as Ghana approaches its next election cycle, with both major parties gearing up for a highly contested race.
