Comedian DKB Backs Mahama’s 24-Hour Discothèque Policy
- DKB defends Mahama's 24-hour discothèque policy
- He cites global examples like Las Vegas and Liverpool
- DKB argues Ghana can adopt similar nightlife policies
Comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney, widely known as DKB, has defended former President John Dramani Mahama’s controversial proposal for a 24-hour discothèque policy in Ghana. The proposal, which has ignited a national debate, has faced criticism from some quarters for being impractical.
In his defense, DKB argued that the concept of operating discothèques around the clock is not far-fetched, noting that such establishments are already commonplace in various cities worldwide. He highlighted examples from major cities like Las Vegas, Liverpool, and Montreal where 24-hour bars, lounges, and nightclubs are a regular feature.
Acknowledging the skepticism about implementing such a policy in Ghana, DKB contended that the country frequently looks to other nations for policy benchmarks, particularly regarding issues such as tax increases. “When they want to increase taxes, they make comparisons to these same Western countries. They use other countries as a yardstick. So Mahama’s policy is not wrong; it’s already happening,” he stated.
DKB emphasized that if Ghana can draw comparisons with other countries for economic policies, it should be equally feasible to consider similar comparisons for the 24-hour discothèque policy and other aspects of the hospitality industry.
