Ghana Unveils Second Largest Rooftop Solar Project
- Ghana launches Africa's largest rooftop solar project
- Powering businesses and boosting economy
- Ghanaian expertise shines
- A step towards a greener future
Ghana has taken a significant stride towards renewable energy with the inauguration of the first phase of its ambitious 1,000 megawatt rooftop solar project. This groundbreaking initiative, set to become the world’s second-largest solar plant upon completion, will power businesses within the country’s free zones and contribute to a cleaner energy mix.
The solar project, covering a vast area of 100,000 square meters, is expected to generate a substantial 24,750 MWh of clean electricity annually. Notably, the entire project, from construction to installation, was executed by Ghanaian engineers and technicians, underscoring the country’s growing expertise in renewable energy.
Government officials and industry leaders expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth and environmental sustainability. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) provided crucial financial support, emphasizing its commitment to fostering green initiatives in Ghana.
The solar plant is owned by Helios Solar Company, a subsidiary of LMI Holdings, and will supply 16.82 megawatts of energy to the company and its partners. The project aligns with Ghana’s broader energy goals, as outlined in the Ghana Energy and Investment Plan, which aims to significantly increase solar capacity in the coming decades.
While this project represents a major milestone, challenges remain in accelerating solar adoption. Continued policy support, financial incentives, and technical expertise will be essential to fully harness Ghana’s solar potential and achieve a sustainable energy future.
