Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has passed a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, with 68 votes in favor and 9 against.
The resolution, co-sponsored by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition and far-right parties, claims a Palestinian state would pose an “existential danger” to Israel and perpetuate the conflict.
The opposition center-left party, led by Yair Lapid, boycotted the vote despite previously supporting a two-state solution. Palestinian leader Mustafa Barghouti condemned the resolution, stating it represents a rejection of peace and the demise of the Oslo agreement.
The move is seen as a significant shift away from the internationally-backed two-state solution and towards a more hardline stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
