The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on investors to support Ghana’s energy sector, highlighting its crucial role in the successful implementation of a 24-hour economy. In a meeting with officials from Dream Power Africa, a solar energy company, on Wednesday, May 21, at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene emphasized that reliable electricity is essential for the country’s development.

He stated, “The government is currently pushing for a 24-hour economy. For this to succeed, energy must be available in rural areas, and industries need a stable supply to function effectively. This, in turn, will contribute significantly to the development of the nation.”

The 24-hour economy was a key promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 general elections. The initiative aims to stimulate continuous economic activity across various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and ICT, by encouraging businesses and public institutions to operate around the clock.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has described the 24-hour economy as a vital part of Ghana’s industrialization agenda and a potential solution to youth unemployment. He clarified that the policy would be voluntary for businesses and supported by appropriate legal and policy frameworks.

While the policy has yet to be implemented, President Mahama has appointed Augustus “Goosie” Tanoh as the Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development, tasking him with overseeing the rollout of this ambitious initiative.
